BIOCOOP is a community based organization (www.biocoop.rw) composed of young people committed to integrating biodiversity conservation and food security. The neighboring areas of Nyungwe national park live in extreme poverty because of the acidic soil which results in low crop yield. Some people take the alternative to illegally go in Nyungwe National Park to rely on the resources in the forest. BIOCOOP has realized that integrating biodiversity conservation, farming, nutrition, environmental management, community health, and ecotourism can promote the economic development of the people around NNP and don’t rely again on the resources from this forest which provides a lot of ecosystem services to the local community, to the country, and to the world in general. Already, BIOCOOP has launched projects on youth entrepreneurship, water and sanitation, removing invasive plants in the Forest, dairy processing, soil improvement and composting, and ICT training. We have created more than 800 jobs, improved nutrition and access to food sources, and reduced poaching in the Forest. Our goal is to create 5,000 jobs in the next 5 years.
