Mil Milagros equips women with skills and resources to improve the lives of children and families in rural Guatemalan communities. We accomplish this through four core programs: Early Childhood Development, School Nutrition, Health and Hygiene, and Education. Guatemala has the fourth highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world and the highest in the Western Hemisphere, with 50% of the children suffering this life sentence of stunted growth, reduced brain capacity, and lower economic and life outcomes. In the rural, indigenous communities, more than 70% of the children suffer from chronic malnutrition. Gas the lowest primary school graduation rate in Latin America. Only 85% of Guatemalan children graduate from primary school. In rural, indigenous areas, like those where Mil Milagros works, that rate is just 51%. Since 2010, 97% of the sixth graders have graduated in Mil Milagros partner schools.
