Reel Grrls has been dedicated to supporting young people to explore, critique and author media through a feminist lens since its founding in 2001. With a disproportionately low percentage of films directed by women and underrepresented communities(a), there is a critical and urgent need to correct these gender and diversity imbalances. The greater the number of diverse voices represented in popular culture, the more our society moves towards gender, racial, and economic equality. Between 2001–2014 Reel Grrls has pioneered a unique boutique program that focuses on youth development, media literacy, and technical skills to train young women to be next generation digital storytellers. In 2014 we launched our Mobile Program initiative to bring high quality programs at a lower cost to reach more young people to expose them to skills in media literacy and production that benefits young people’s personal and professional development in story telling. It is essential that we connect with youth whose voices are not being appropriately represented in the media, we actively look for partners to support in improving our service delivery of our Mobile Programs and advanced jobs training programs like our Apprenticeship Program and our Social Enterprise Program, Reel Grrls’ Productions (RGP). We are excited to launch in 2018, #BlvckGrrlsMagic, one of the first identity based initiatives to build pipelines centered around creating more media makers of color.
