In 2002, a group of Austin women convened with the goal of founding a program to serve needs of low-income women in Central Texas. Coming from various professional arenas, they were all familiar with the Dress for Success model and were convinced that the program could positively change the lives of women-in-need. Austin's doors opened in late 2003 and has since helped over 14,000 women in seven Texas counties. Dress for Success was founded in New York City in 1996. Three nuns and an altruistically-minded young woman working in a church basement in Spanish Harlem launched an organization that now exists in over 150 cities throughout the world. Today Dress for Success Worldwide provides affiliates with the brand, guidelines and policy oversight. Local affiliates are responsibile for their own financial and donor support.
