Learn to Re-create was developed to respond to a gap in the Fashion and Textiles Industry and provide employment opportunities within this industry. The social enterprise was set-up to provide a platform for people who wanted to work in the Fashion and Textiles but lacked the required skills, knowledge or competence. We wanted to use the creative process and art which are proven as an effective complementary therapy to help people benefit from increased self-esteem, confidence, general wellbeing and financial independence. Due to people with no or few qualifications having difficulty securing employment, we wanted to provide skills training to enable the beneficiaries to set-up a business, to progress to further learning, take up an apprenticeship position, paid/unpaid work and/or get involved in their community. In addition, it has a focus to provide a platform for Fashion and Textiles professionals to upgrade their skills to industry standards, to enhance their career prospects and/or grow their business. We planned to meet these needs by providing education through training in garment and textiles production techniques and offering employment primarily through the production of Fashion items. This was in response to the needs and issues identified by the Fashion and Textiles Industry where craft and operative level jobs and technical skills are required to meet the demands of the market.
