Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute (MOI) is a creative writing and tutoring nonprofit that empowers underserved K–12 youth to think creatively, write effectively, and succeed academically alongside a community of caring volunteers. We offer free creative writing and tutoring programs to students in the Twin Cities Metro area. Our five arms of programming are: After-School Homework Help, Creative Writing Workshops, In-School Tutoring, Storytelling & Bookmaking Field Trips, and Young Authors' Book Project. All our programs encourage students to take ownership of their voices, as people and authors—students leave our programs as published authors, aware of the value of their words. We seek to provide a whimsical, engaging space for youth to think and learn one-on-one or one-on-some with our trained, talented volunteers. MOI is a chapter-in-development of 826 National, a nationwide network of similar creative writing and tutoring centers. Our programs and philosophies are inspired by and modeled off the successful programs run in the eight 826 centers around the country, and the belief that individualized attention is critical to improving literacy and equipping students for future success. In the 2017–2018 school year, MOI worked with over 1,200 students across our programs, producing over 50 student-written books and publications.
