The Sacred Heart Center (SHC), a non-profit community center, is one of the only organizations in the Richmond area dedicated to serving the low /moderate income Latino population. Our current mission is to create a hub for the Latino community that opens pathways to social and economic integration, family success, and community leadership. The area in general offers limited services that target Latino families. Many area organizations do not have sufficient staff that speak Spanish, or have not yet implemented culturally-appropriate services that are welcoming to Latino families and individuals. SHC program participants often speak of finding a sense of community and belonging at the SHC . Over the last 5-6 years, as the SHC has grown exponentially with strong educational programs, there is a high demand for overall services as the Latino community also grows in the Richmond Metro Area. In fiscal year 2015-16, over 500 students enrolled in our core educational programs and over 6,400 community members were served through our various partnerships with service providers as part of our community hub work. As a small non-profit not relying on federal or state funding, the SHC is responsive to the unique and changing needs of the community; our programs are designed to fill gaps in services and open opportunities for those eager to advance themselves and their families. As Latino families succeed, they help to build a more prosperous and healthy Richmond Metro Area.
