BIRDS has a vision of a rural community of active, engaged citizens committed to the creation of a more just and equitable world. This is premised on the belief that the health of societies exists in direct proportion to the degree of balance between the State, the private sector and civil society. Thus, BIRDS provide a focal point for knowledge-sharing, common interest representation, rural institution-building and engagement among these disparate sectors. It acts as an advocate for rural citizens’ participation as an essential component of governance and democracy nationwide. Also it seeks to amplify the voices and opinions of ordinary people and give expression to the enormous creative energy of the rural sector of civil society. It further recognizes that for effective and sustainable civic participation in development to occur, citizens must enjoys rights of free association and be able to engage in all sectors of society. Its mission is to transform the lives of low income individuals and families to overcome rural poverty which is at the roots of all the people's problems; by increasing the last-mile access to social businesses that address gaps in wealth, health care, education and community infrastructures. BIRDS work with Associations, Common Initiative Groups and other community members to provide them with the knowledge, skills and support they need in order to set up and manage practicable and sustainable projects that meet local needs.
