Growth Through Learning is supporting the education efforts of young women.
Growth Through Learning (GTL) is a secular organization that was founded in 1997 that seeks to support bright, but financially incapable young women in East Africa that are in need of an education. GTL was established when Roger White, GTL founder, had a conversation with a young woman about why she wasn’t in school. She explained that her parents couldn’t afford the school fees; schools in East Africa require tuition payments. When Roger returned home, he spoke with supporters and returned to establish GTL.
With the support of Growth Through Learning:
- In the last 20 years, more than 1,300 girls have attended quality boarding schools and have received high school diplomas;
- In the last three years, 697 young women have received scholarships;
- There are currently 17 schools who are within the program;
Once a girl qualifies and receives a scholarship for schooling, she is supported through high school, under the condition that she maintains her grades.
A scholarship provided by GTL will cover the costs of:
- Exam Fees
- School Supplies
- Room and Board
Girls are encouraged to attend boarding schools because they are generally taught at a much higher level than day schools. Although more expensive than day schools, a boarding school has access to electricity and water, consistent meals, dedicated study time and mentors; all of which enables them to focus on their school work. Boarding schools keep young female students safe. All too often girls who live in poverty are vulnerable to neglect or abuse.
Educators and development professionals recommend that keeping young girls and young women longer in school is an effective way to protect them from early marriages, pregnancies, rape and physical abuse. Growth Through Learning envisions a world where all women receive the education they need to realize their own potential and fulfill their aspirations for themselves, their families and their communities.
