Budget Buddies: Equipping Women with Tools for Life

| Updated July 10, 2018

"If you control your finances, you control your future."

Budget Buddies is a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 to empower low-income women through financial literacy. Budget Buddies seeks to reach generations of women who have never had a financial education.

Kathy Brough, Budget Buddies co-founder, believes that money is the biggest stressor for those who are homeless, living in a shelter or undergoing transitional living.

Each client is paired with a financial coach volunteer, or ‘buddy’, who is dedicated to working with only them. A buddy is dedicated to a client and they spend the next six months attending, roughly 12 workshops together where financial best practices are taught. Every other week, the client and buddy will meet for a one-on-one where they talk about the client's progress.

Once the client starts exercising their power to make financial decisions, they get a feeling of empowerment. This educational program enables these women to continue practicing these skills that they have learned in the last six months.

Budget Buddies is working to equip each client with tools that they can use for the rest of their lives. Their belief is that if you control your finances, you control your future. It’s a very important piece of empowering women, to give them control over their money and to make them feel like they know what they’re doing.
