Supporting girls and women in Cameroon with scholarships for education.Published April 2018
A2Empowerment is a charity that provides educational scholarships and support to girls and women to increase their knowledge and empower themselves to lead healthier, more productive lives.
Since its founding in 2008, the company has awarded over 1,200 educational scholarships to young women in Cameroon. Recipients are chosen based on need and merit, with a priority placed on selecting girls in the later years of high school when they are at a high risk of dropping out.
This year, they are supporting 263 students and approximately $75 will cover tuition (per student), fees and books for a year of school. All company overhead costs have been covered by the company co-founders, so the full amount of all donations is put towards scholarships. The project is set up as a Peace Corps Partnership Project, so all funding is strictly monitored by the Peace Corps and A2Empowerment.
Scholarship recipients are expected to meet monthly with their mentors and other scholarship recipients in their area to report on their academic progress and to discuss topics, like heath and wellness. In addition, the scholarship recipients serve as role models by volunteering in their communities, for example to tutor younger students, as part of the Community Contribution required for all Peace Corps Partnership Projects
