The Latin American Youth Center Is Shaping Young Lives

| Updated September 11, 2018

The LAYC empowers a generation of youths by providing comprehensive innovative programs.

The Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood with multicultural, comprehensive and innovative programs that address youths’ social, academic and career needs.

Since their founding in the late 1960’s, LAYC has grown from a small grassroots recreation center to a nationally recognized agency serving all low-income youth. Each year, LAYC serves over 4,000 youth and families through youth centers, school-based sites and public charter schools in the District of Columbia and Maryland Prince George's and Montgomery Counties.

LAYC is changing the lives of thousands of Latino youths who are allowed to practice freedom of expression. The youth feel valued and respect the life skills that they are taught. They have learned how to organize powerful community events such as conferences, workshops and meetings to solve community problems. In one year, LAYC has been able to impact 600 people with their message. They understand that the youth are an essential part of making positive change and strides towards social justice.

Part of the change coming in April 2018 is a graphic novel, Comics Without Borders, that has been produced by the youth community. Comics Without Borders will be a compilation of powerful memoirs, interviews, biographies and other personal stories.
