My Story:
My older sister, Samantha, struggled with substance abuse for most of her life. She was such an important part of our family. She and my dad ran our family business together. She was the only one my mother would let help in the kitchen. She was so warm and giving - we'll miss her every day.
As a family we struggled with admitting that Samantha had a problem. She seemed so highly functioning to us. It was hard to argue with her about her addiction when she said things like "look, I make it to work every day and all of my bills are paid."
I think my oldest sister was honestly the only one in the family who challenged Samantha and fought the hardest to get help for her. I kind of thought she was just being a pain in the ass but it turns out, she was right. I think the rest of us were in denial and uneducated.
Why I fight:
Because no family should have to lose a loved one because they're ill-informed. I fight for Samantha and the family she left behind.
