YouthBuild - Family Pathways Program
We began with the planning stage in the spring of 2017, preparing the new classroom and working on the details of our partnership with Child, Inc. The first young parents were enrolled at the beginning of the 17-18 school year.
So far, the YouthBuild - Family Pathways Program has:
• Served 17 parents and 17 children in the 17-18 school year
• Served 14 parents and 13 children in the 18-19 school year
• And served 14 parents and 17 children in the 19-20 school year.
The young parents who join our Family Pathways program face many challenges and display such strength in meeting them. We celebrate every victory because we know how much work they have put in to achieve them.
Since the program began 17 have earned a GED or high school diploma, 16 have earned Vocational Certifications and 16 have gone on to employment or post-secondary education.
Here is what the parents have to say about the program:
"I don't know where I would be right now without the help of the child care center. I've been able to do so much. I have earned my CHW, CNA, and am now a full time Americorps member in the Healthcorps classroom" - Katy M.
"Once I got child care, I was able to get my life back on track. I was coming to school regularly. I graduated and now I'm looking for a well-paying job." - Mariah P.
“I was asking family members to watch Luna during the day while I went to school and paying them over $100 a week to do so. It was nearly impossible to find someone every day and I can’t afford to pay for child care myself.” - Alyzeah M.
"The parenting class helped me learn a lot - I thought I knew everything about parenting but in class, I learned to show [my daughter] affection. Children need lots of affection when they are crying. I have learned how to comfort my daughter. The class taught me to interact with my daughter more."- Mariah P.
“Everyone in the program was so encouraging and motivated me to achieve my dreams. They helped me obtain my GED and encouraged me to apply to college. I’m proud to say that I am now enrolled in ACC and pursuing my dream of graduating with a healthcare degree. I have dreams that I thought would never come true, but with the help of AYW I am starting to believe that dreams do come true.”- Destiny B.
Here at American YouthWorks we would like to thank everyone who contributes to United Way. It takes all of us working together to create brighter futures for young families here in central Texas.
