All Star Code is a computer science organization focused on creating economic opportunity by developing a new generation of boys and young men of color with an entrepreneurial mindset who have the tools they need to succeed in a technological world. All Star Code’s core pillars—Dare Greatly, Celebrate Failure, and Tell Your Story— define a culture that empowers our All Stars to take risks, grow from failure, and speak confidently about their triumphs.
All Star Code students challenge societal narratives on who tech entrepreneurship is designed for. Anthony Baldeosingh is a young man of color reshaping this cultural landscape, representing the fortitude that All Star Code inculcates within every student during the program. Three years ago, Anthony joined the All Star Code brotherhood with a passion for entrepreneurship and little coding experience; today he oversees his own international start-up, Saash Marketing, founded during his freshman year of college. Anthony’s journey toward establishing a revenue-generating company was difficult; at times, he became overwhelmed with the financial burden of maintaining a college education and could not fathom how to raise the capital to fund his dream company. Anthony’s perseverance, vision, and ability to dare greatly eventually kicked in to get him to where is today.
While All Star Code’s mission aspires to prepare young men of color for success throughout their careers, we understand that setbacks are necessary experiences that propel their journeys. Ayinde Castro continuously celebrates failure and has used those experiences to his advantage ever since he stepped into our program. Even through numerous internship rejections, Ayinde remains focused on his dream of breaking into the tech industry. Ayinde’s resiliency led him to achieve inspiring career milestones from internships at Deloitte, JP Morgan Chase, and IBM to being featured as a Forbes’ Under 30 Scholar. Ayinde finds the silver lining within all of the obstacles he faces which is a life lesson, career skill, and coding technique integral to our pedagogy.
Creating a space for our Scholars to inspire social impact is a key component of carrying out our vision. Though our Scholars come from a range of different experiences and struggles, we aim to empower them to utilize their unique talents for social good regardless of their economic background, immigration status, mental health struggles, disability, or sexual orientation. The inclusive community we’ve grown inspired Gary Coltrane to pay it forward through his story-telling. Last Summer, Gary returned to All Star Code as a Summer Intensive Lead Instructor and his role modeling and unique perspective as a graduate of the program was a truly invaluable experience for our students. Gary’s leadership also extends far beyond the classroom as the founder of DayStrive, a start-up he designed to reduce recidivism in the criminal justice system. Gary attributes his recollections of growing up in the Bronx and watching friends enter the system as his reason for starting the company, and shares the importance of companies like DayStrive on platforms including Cheddar and Bloomberg.
